Book Review: Blood and Whiskey, by Clark Hays & Kathleen McFall

Blood and Whiskey, by Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall.

I have had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow Portland authors of the new adventurous, thrilling vampire series, The Cowboy and the Vampire, by Kathleen McFall and Clark Hays. Well, in truth, it’s Kathleen and me sneaking out for fine dining at a local pub to talk about our latest works in progress and the successes and lessons of past projects.

It is my pleasure now to give you a review of their latest book in the vampire series, Blood and Whiskey.

There’s something for everyone …

Once again, authors Kathleen McFall and Clark Hays have penned another gripping, action-packed, romance adventure starring our favorite bloodthirsty vampires and witty, tough cowboys.

What better place for a vampire apocalypse to take place than in the small, western town of LonePine, Wyoming, population 438. In this sequel to The Cowboy and the Vampire, Lizzie and Tucker have much more to lose than just their lives and love for each other … Lizzie is pregnant!

Characters from the first book, Elita, Jenkins, Lenny, Tucker’s Dad and his faithful dog, Rex, are an odd team, which makes for some fun dialogue and unusual situations, but their passion for righting wrongs proves thicker than blood. They unite with Tucker and Lizzie, banding under both sun and moon, to protect their livelihood, Lizzie’s unborn child, and the rest of civilization.

Even though Lizzie is a new vampire, she has old blood in her veins and quick wit, both of which help her confront the dangerous intentions of the vampire council, the Council of Nine, to whom she must prove she can turn a full-blooded Adomite (human) into a vampire. If she fails, more Adomites will die, the Reptile race will gain power, and the world will become a treacherous place for all living under both sun and stars.

As Lizzie is drawn into Vampire lore and politics, Tucker finds himself in a race to save Lenny’s niece from the vampires’ blood farm, but his battle is just beginning. When the Council arrives in LonePine to attend Lizzie’s turning of another Adomite, matters get complicated and messy for Lizzie and Tucker. There is plenty of gunfire, bloodshed, and tough sacrifice, all delicately wrapped up into a satisfying ending.

I particularly liked the author’s ability to mix humor, horror, and adventure into a seamless, exciting plot.  The characters are hilarious and full of depth in how they each confront their own fears and take back what’s rightfully theirs.

If you enjoyed The Cowboy and the Vampire, you will not be disappointed with this next sequel, Blood and Whiskey. The stakes are higher, the action is compelling, and the romance between Lizzie and Tucker reaches even deeper into the heart of rugged, Wyoming. I recommend this book to anyone who likes genre fiction. There’s something for everyone in Blood and Whiskey.

5 stars!

Thanks for an excellent read Kathleen and Clark. I love the series … and you know what I’m going to say next, right? #3 brewing?
